Xmas

So we did get a ski day in, and so did I, and also a second intro to Nordic this week, so the ski stuff is going and hopefully will continue right through late winter if not spring. I took Mad Bee and Will to the Ski hill Thursday before Xmas and they were impressed and impressive. No worries for Madeleine, she was straight off, down the bunny slope as her friends were there and she was eager to get after them. Lets see Lief and Freyja and Murdoch then Caleb, it was a real social gathering, don't forget Kaylin too. Will was also keen for fun and within three runs was calling to go alone. It was my best day out so far and I didn't even get my skis out. The social aspect of the ski hill really comes out with the kids and really increases the fun too. The only reason they wanted to call it a day was simply exhaustion. On to Nordic now, Santa brought them cross country skis for Christmas and we got out on them across the street for a little bit that day. Not as big of a thrill but when we get to the Nordic Centre for lessons on Saturday it will be a different story of fun with friends on groomed trails. The only trouble with the kids ski exploits is I forgot the camera both times but here are Tom and Jeff on Christmas eve and the bundled winter kids.

Merry Christmas

O HARK THE HERALD ANGELS I really need to find some spare time. We have been having fun here and Christmas was quite a show. The children had a lot of fun anticipating and participating in all sorts of Christmas fun. Getting right to the core Lisa and Josie were part of the organizing of a great Christmas Eve Day at the Bowling Alley and it turned out be even more fun and festive than it sounds. A great afternoon of Christmas visiting and playing all focused under the beautifulness of bowling. I hope it is a winning tradition. Christmas eve was quiet just waiting for Santa and helping get stuff set for him kept us up late enough we almost saw him. Christmas Morning everyone showed incredible restraint and waited until about ten after seven to hustle upstairs. Madeleine being five is tuned in to what Christmas and Santa are all about so she was electrified, and am sure I could still get a shock from her a few days later. CeeCee just giggled and smiled, marching around like she knew what was up and she did, it was fun and she was not going to miss any. William was just amazed I think. Hockey stuff, ski stuff, cars trains he could not absorb it and was pretty mellow and awe filled most of the time. He understands Christmas now and will really look forward to it next time it comes up in conversation and in the year. Lots of fun and the Patry's haven't even arrived yet.

Skating

This is the rink a couple weeks ago and it is the looking pretty much the same after a mild damp week. Will and I chipped the icy crust away yesterday after a good night of negative ten or colder and were back in in business although a bit bumpy. We got out to the Forum two days in a row to skate also. Will and Brodie played some hockey yesterday and today he played with a bunch of big kids playing there. Mad and Brenn just skated and played yesterday and had a good girl time together I guess. Today MB and I skated and played chase games in between taking passes with Will. Maybe skiing tomorrow.

Xmas concert

Madeleine's School Christmas Concert is available on youtube.com (search mountain view elementary Christmas concert 2010) or revelstokecurrent.com has it as its feature clip for a bit. She is wearing a Santa hat and is awesome, stage right. Brennan is in black just to her lower right and is also awesome. Brodie is top stage left and also pretty impressive if not totally awesome. If you know our other Friends just ask I will point them out. Her is a great photo in which you can see our house if you know where to look.

Ski Pix

That picture of the mountain needs some help so everyone will come and visit us and come ski with me or I want to terrify my mother or make my brothers feel inferior. Who really knows, but seriously Someone needs to visit so I can take them skiing, any travel agents, hippy types or skiers out there? So that picture is from about 2600m, this other one is the same spot looking more downward. There is low cloud cover in the valley to the right that is the end of rogers Pass the trans Canada highway so probably at about 1000m. You can't ski all the way down here but behind me you can. Its a long way down, exactly 5620ft. So come and have fun in the snow we take visitors and we have fun. Also, think of that figure 5620, in the Santa parade picture, just off to Will`s left Greg Hill and his family watched the parade. He is one of Revelstokes ski celebs, he is skiing 2million vertical feet in one year, this year so almost there, all gained by hiking or skinning up his descents. Google him to get the details apparently the Globe and Mail did a feature on him a bit ago. cool

Skiing

Since I last posted anything I have had four days of skiing in, well four 3 hour sessions I guess. The snow has been good and getting better almost daily. The kids skiing thing still hasn't worked out but will soon, William is asking about it every day. I am hunting for equipment still but will get him rentals if necessary. Madeleine has her first Christmas concert tomorrow and Cee Cee has two new teeth. I am really feeling uninspired to write much here as there always seems to be an obstacle to getting out the real good and fun goings on with us. For instance MadB is havigntrouble going to sleep and it just throws everything off a bit. I could easily say nothing is new and that is how I feel but the Santa Claus Parade rolled through town last Saturday and the kids really loved it. Then we went to a hockey game. We've been skating and just simply playing lots in the snow. We have the house decorated for Christmas and it is all coming so fast. I guess I am just getting overwhelmed at the pace here. I think I need a renewed focus on fun instead of just getting through the day. Mad had a dance recital, I have had crazy nights at work, the power was out for six hours, I shouldn't feel uninspired there is lots going on. If I wrote right after the hill I would go on forever about my runs and how sore my htighs are and how sweet it is to live by this mountain. My timing is just bad and we need to spend more time skiing that is the plain and simple answer. Next week MadB Will and I will ski in one discipline or the other everyday and I will write about it in the excitement of it all. I will let you know how it goes. The pictures are North Bowl at RMR on Saturday from Meet the neighbours entrance and waiting for Santa.

This week

We have a quiet yet busy week here, most things like swimming and dance and gymnastics are ending for the season so we can get some real fun playing in now. I will hopefully get the kids up skiing this week as we are getting more snow today, about 10 cm I guess. Now the busy holiday season starts so lets see how much fun we really have, I will try harder to keep everyone posted on any real excitement.

Wintery times

We can certainly say that winter has arrived here. Three good snowfalls now and the feeling is pretty serious that winter is here to stay for the next four or five months. I should be skiing Friday I hope although it is said to be pretty thin on the mountain still. William, is happy and will play outside in the snow all day doing whatever so we will get him skiing right away. Madeleine is quite happy in the snow and we will paly it by her feelings for her ski career. CeeCee has a great interest too, but Will seems the most passionate about snow. We are also trying to get a skating rink built and it is coming along slowly. We had a good cold week to start and now more snow to get a base done really well but it isn't terribly cold. There are many skeptics that outdoor rinks are not possible as the amount of snow and mild temps but I will try. The arena skating times don't fit our schedule well so it will be nice to skate whenever we want just like we were used to back in Inglewood.

mystery calf

I do not have gout nor is it a blood clot. It is a strange mysterious calf issue that I have. Otherwise all is fine here, just getting by with a bit of sanity intact. Let me see CeeCee starts kindergarten inhow many years. Sill no winter adventure stories unfortunately for all of us.

Wednesday, November 17, 2010

Well the snow has finally hit town so things will start rocking here in no time. I have talked to several people who have been out ski touring already and no one can talk about anything else. I am very excited about the prospects ahead with all the new people I have met. I am most intrigued by the activities that Will and CeeCee can get up to, and I really hope it involves fun on skis or at least in the snow.
I have gout now to go with all the things flying through our house, too much beer and not enough real food. I guess it is a good indicator of my old and fragile age.

the week of sick

We have had some sort of virus run through the house this week and the washer and dryer have been running nonstop right after it. CeeCee and I actually avoided it completely although she is working on her third cold this fall. Will puked on the seventh, Sunday I believe, then Mad and Jo followed each day after. Will was the most hilarious puker. Sitting reading a story before bed he looked a bit pale and had lagged a bit later in the day, Josie asked if he felt OK. Ya Momma, he replied but about ten seconds later he hurled a tsunami of brown curdles all over his bed. We had just finished setting up their new room an hour ago and had embarked on a fresh new sleep program designed to get them tosleep in and aid in their journey to the bathroom whilst half asleep. WE may try that again later but I would be surprised. He chucked up four pints probably and it smelled of incredibly pungent Asiago cheese and warm malt vinegar with a dash of bile. I was incredibly curious as too what had been consumed at the birthday party earlier that day. Within seconds he was sitting there covered in barf ready for the story to continue saying he was done puking momma. Well he was done and seemed to be pretty positive but was in bed once his sheets were changed and the cover disinfected and bed remade. When I returned from getting that laundry started for the 72 hour enduro session it was about to face they were all asleep. MadB was next on Mon she got the carpet in her room, which i am still scrubbing plus just a few dribbles on all sheets and blankets to warrant their laundering. She had a tougher time and was much more affected by her malady. She took it quite seriously even personally that she was sick. Josie tells me between wretches she would list off the things she was going to have to miss because she was sick wailing and moaning when she couldn't think of words fast enough also trying to sneak peeks in the mirror to see how she looked through all this . She had a lot of dry heaving and was up quite a bit compared to Wil. Again the laundry piled up then Josie's turn on tuesday. She did not get puke on anything thankfully. Proabably four loads of laundry a day average for three days plus rewash after everyone felt better, usually we do at least a load a day. Wow what fun. Wednesday everyone was back to the normal, Thursday we all fought for most of the day so i took my leave from 3-10 and accomplished many tasks like insulating a wall, repairing/butchering the bathroom floor and replacing the toilet. What a week.

A space in my nose

I am back from Calgary and ready to enjoy a few days off here. I willtry to really get settled into this house before work gets busy again. There has been a tonne of rain which we would have loved trade for snow but it has been on the mild side for weeks it seems. I am keen to ski and Lake Louise has opened already so I am feeling weird about the long season Alberta enjoys albeit cold. Driving past Louise a few days back they are really just dusted and the Downhill course is all man made for the world cup in a couple weeks. The top of Our mountain has been bombardered with snow for a couple weeks, we just need some lower base to keep on track with the fast approaching opening day. I had day surgery in Calgary last week to remove a lot of polyps from my nostrils and sinuses, so my nose now works the way it did five years ago. Unfortunately we still have a kid in diapers and I am smelling all the odours I have happily been ignorant of. It smells good here outside unlike Inglewood which I beleive caused my problem in the first place. Revelstoke is moist and cedary and it actually smells like snow today. Josie mentioned this and I had to agree. She is my best life helpmate and oooey goooey wife without whom life would unbeleivably different and not as fulfilling with regards to family life and the smells of different preciptitation and all the great benefits acheived throughout and therein. I am not drunk but do feel strange still from the anaesthetic. I am also aware of a giant space behind my nose. I really love the kids and think they are cute probably because josie is cute. Anyway she said other people's husbands say nice things about their wives but I don't really beleive her. I can see husbands saying nice things about other people's wives but we realize these are qualifiied statements that have no real meaning because of the understood factors involved in the statement so noonne can really be introuble from wife or other husband, which may have more bearing so as not to decline in status as a dude. In summary I really think everyone is great and awesome especially my wife and all of her freinds.

We had a fun time for Halloween

Mad and Wil had a very fun day and a great night of trick or treating. They started out with a bit of hestation but near the end were practically running to houses. Scary and creepy they were right into it, only one house was completely passed by and one a bit too scray to go right up to. Luckily this man came out. That is it with them on the side walk. can everyone guess the costumes, wil's is a little more complex than you might think.

Friday, October 29, 2010

The house is coming along slowly and I have to get a nose procedure done in Calgary later this week. These are the big things on the brain these days. Work is slow and it is rainy still. Halloween is fast approaching and we did have our first taste of it today with Madeleine's class party. The shcool had a dress up day, and every friday there is an asssembly for the whole school first thing in the day. I took C and Wil dressed in their costumes and it was quite fun, it even turned out the place we play after, also at the school, was doing a dressup day so it worked out nicely. That was until CC found the paints and decided to get messy. She started out a fresh little tomato and quickly transfromed into a rotten one with colourful mould. The big kids at school had a dance which we checked out for a bit before a quick visit to Madb's kindergarten Halloween party. Unfortunately I was not thinking clearly and forgot the camera. Hopefully Lisa got some photos today, otherwise we will surely get some Sunday Night for trick or treating. Mad was a hula girl, and wil a cowboy today, we will see what they decide on for Sun. I need a costume myself for work Saturday night as we are hosting a big halloween party at work.

The never ending junk pile

Wow, we have a lot of stuff, junk or whatever it may be. I believe everything can be useful someday but I and probably mistaken. There is still stuff over in the rental house and still unpacked boxes here, and our labelling system in Calgary failed. The other day Will wanted to draw Spiderman but I couldn't locate a red marker or crayon. We are living in house chaos and i think the kids are hitting a stress plateau that demands some kind of order or routine. I feel that after today most of their stuff is here and accessible at least by me or Josie and there are regular patterns of at least meals and sleep and the weekly things like dance and swimming. I think we have been neglecting the settling in to play with them too much and not focussing on getting the daily grind and order established. Who will ever know what is the best balance. We will make it but there will be things to sort in the decade to come whether they are junk or behaviour.

Oktoberfest

At my work we celebrated Oktoberfest. I looked pretty cool and thought everyone would agree, so have a look. Murray Turner kindly came by to take my picture when he was in town a few weeks ago. November is MOvember so watch for my cool mustaches, if anyone wants to pledge for prostate cancer research leave me a comment and I will email you. Did I mention we had a bear across the street that Will C and I watched for a few minutes from inside It was pretty cool.

wow we are busy

I can't believe I haven't put anything up for almost 2 weeks. We haven't been hooked up the the inter web for too long either I guess. sorry if anyone actually misses us but we a re all the same as always. Trying to get things organized here is tricky with both of us working and MB at school and CeeCee having naps. Maybe soon we will get settled in. Any way I don't have much time and no big news anyway. We had a great thanksgiving with the Patrys and the Nielsens, Guess we were fortunate to have people take care of us while so busy. I hope everyone else had lots of fun too.

Kids at New house

Here are some pictures Josie took yesterday. I just returned from moving a few more boxes and checking it out at night time, it felt good to be home but I had nothing to do so I came back to our lovely rental home, where the real important things are.
MadB was student of the week for kindergarten at Mountainview. They receive a high five award at there weekly assembly, it was pretty cute, Josie cried for about fifteen minutes.

The House.

The deal has closed and we now own a lovely 1959 ranch style house in beautiful downtown Revelstoke. We we sceptical for a while but it all came together and we will be moveing in throughout the month. I will get some pictures up tonight. Hopefully. The kids are pretty excited.

Moe about two weeks ago

Wow I only got to Friday on that trip so I guess I am probably being a little too detailed. Saturday we did the pool again and MadB went down the waterslide about six times after showing Josie her new bravery Friday evening, then lunch and then sight seeing again. We went to an art gallery at which there was a cool exhibition by two local women who work with fabric. The whole project was a maze of hangings with all sorts of interesting things concerning consumerism, packaging and regeneration, very interesting for the kids as there were hands on aspects. Next we visited the Dukhobor heritage centre, right next door. It was basically a cultural and agricultural commune/colony big into fruit growing a maintaining their culture. Verigin was one of their infamous leaders who was infamously assassinated by local government and business concerns, so goes the story. There is a lovely bronze statue of Tolstoy who was a major financial backer of the colony and their journey from Russia plus a beautiful suspension bridge they built across the Kootenay river as it meets the Columbia. Big fun and we kept busy at the library and the local museum until Josie was ready to go. We left for Nelson to spend the night . Nelson is a beautiful town and we never seem to give ourselves much time there but will one of these days. Beautiful setting and beautiful buildings and lots of interesting shops and things going on. We stayed overnight there and were gone again 14 hours later. The road travels north up the Kootenay Lake and is one of the most beautiful drives I’ve ever been on although it did rain all day. Cottages and sailboats lined the lakeshore giving a rustic atmosphere rather than the more commonly seen condo developments that pass for vacation properties these days. Big highlight if the trip on Sunday was the Ainsworth Hotspings perched on a steep mountainside above the lake. Here is a picture of me in the cave pool there. The kids were to scared to go in the cave which probably shows good instincts as it is pretty creepy, you go in about 15m. There is a nice big pool outdoors which they loved.

new moon festival

I still haven't finished the story of our little trip but I have a few minutes to put up some new pictures of Madeleine performing with her dance class at the new moon festival, which is a chamber of commerce initiative to bring more folks downtown to shop. There were lots of fun things going especially the stage area where several exciting things were done especially Madb's Gypsy dance. Will had a face paint as a grizzly bear. Also there has been a bear prowling the neighbourhood, notice the large scat in the neighbours yard.

Zuckerberg

Friday morning after dropping Josie off for her course we went back to the hotel to go for a swim. We had a pretty fun time with the area all to ourselves, the highlight for everyone being the waterslide. Madeleine went down by herself five times and would have continued but CeeCee was getting a bit testy. We went up and got ready for lunch for which they behaved and ate in great form. I was relieved and pleased with all three of them I am sorry to disappoint you but no wild behaviour stories where the three gang up on me and make me look like a crazed buffoon in a kiddie food fight. Next we went for a walk so C could get a nap and the other two could run about. Will is C’s sleep monitor saying “ Her eyes are open or CeeCee is asleep” and that was the message before we left the parking lot. She did not even stir when I transferred her to the Chariot. We went to Zuckerberg Island where a chapel was built for Russian immigrants, I am not sure how they are related but here was a larger Dukhobor settlement there as well. We crossed on a suspension bridge to which the Chariot barely fit and was stuck several times. Meanwhile this is supposed to be closing day for the house and I am fielding calls from the mortgage broker and realtor. So I get to the far side which has a gate and I don’t fit. Will and MB are already ahead and running around just off the bridge where there was a five metre crater that really had them enthralled. Next there were people coming behind and I was still on the phone I could not corral the bigs so I forced the gate to open in reverse as I have noticed it comes open wider that way and I luckily made it through without tipping out or waking up CeeCee. No drama there either, all was well, so we tour around finding graves and cool carvings and the chapel and the two had a blast exploring and discovering. That is that and we end our time together playing outside of Josie’s course at a great park with playground and splash park. Will figured out how to get the water running there and got himself a little misty. It was only about fifteen degrees but luckily sunny. Madeleine soaked herself as she thought Will was having too much fun in there and had to join in, all the while I am changing C’s diaper and getting the deal done on the phone again with the realtor. Also a nice family had two little parrots and a dog so MB had essentially joined them for about a hour playing with the birds. So we had some fun and did some stuff. This picture is the suspension bridge and I was on a little land bridge found later to easily return the Chariot on. The kids are getting brave.

A little trip

Our trip through the Selkirk mountains was a great success, Josie was trained, we swam, went to see the sights and had plenty of family fun and stress. We started out after a very busy day of school and gymnastics Thursday, burdened by getting the conditions met for the house offer before we left. It was very last minute and unnecessarily so for the things should have been squared away days ago. Probably all my fault for procrastinating and being distracted by kids and trying to have a good time and work. But it got finished and hopefully by Wednesday we will know for sure that all is well with the purchase. Back to our little trip now, it poured rain all day Thursday and a lot of the weekend too but we made the best of it albeit wet. The ferry ride was well timed and dry, there were rainbows and sunbeams through the cloud and we ate sandwiches in the van. CeeCee’s car seat was for a while forward facing as she is over one and big. All these things plus mountain driving ended in her car sickness a while later, right at Summit Lake where we camped this past summer. A half hour later we stopped again for a stretch and play at Silverton as everyone was being so good and we knew they had a good park. A while later back in the car William puked. Josie caught this one with a food container and good thing too as it was pretty liquid. I think he chugged a whole half litre water bottle after Silverton. C’s barf was thick and chunky, real easy to clean up only it was everywhere, on her car seat and its side and straps, her cloths, the van seat and its cup holder, the floor of the van and a toy. It was luckily sunny when we had to get out and clean this small break in the cloud our little break that day. MadB was superb the whole time keeping busy and only asking “are we at Castlegar yet” about seventy times. Nonetheless Josie was stressed out and simply wanted to get there to get her kids to bed. C and Will both slept the last three quarters of an hour and MB looked about as excited as she could be to see the hotel and Castlegar. We finally made it in and got them to bed in good time we, stayed in bed too. The Super8 breakfast was a hit with fruit loops and waffles plus a water slide and pretty nice pool. We took Josie to work and discovered that Castlegar is a pretty cute city. More on this trip later and there is a lot more for three days in the rain we were busy.

More rain

We have had more rain in Sept here than a whole year in Calgary I would guess. It is two rainy one OK and so on. It is OK though we will get the our vitamin D through other sources. I will start fishing I guess. the salmon are spawning and the rivers are quite full this year. I will try to get some pictures this weekend as we are off to explore/ train in the southern end of the Columbia basin. Josie has two days of training in Castlegar so we are all going and making an adventure out of it. No news on the house yet and MadB still loves school.

Mountainview school

Here is Mad at school. Not much else happening right now, still waiting on house news and trying to get into some sort of rhythm. At Mountainview Elementary, MB has a lovely view of Mt. Begbie, and is right across the street from the river. It is a wonderful setting amongst tall cedars with Mt. Revelstoke as the backdrop. The beautiful old building and it setting inspire something soothing as there seems to be a living atmosphere of community and caring there. Even Will joined in with Brodie at recess Friday when we picked up MB and all the kids played just like he belonged there. Even CeeCee who was set to be trampled by seven or eight ten year olds was given way to as they paused their game for her well being. There are nice kids here as I have mentioned before. MadB's class has Guinea Pigs and she got permission to take Will into see them Friday. she is thoughtful and nice a lot of the time.

Madeleine has gone to school

The previous posting was started a week ago. What a crazy life we have here, it is just go go go and no time to keep things organized. CeeCee is walking all the time now and MadB has finished her second day of kindergarten. Will is maintaining the status quo.
It is a simple pleasure that I have discovered with CeeCee that I only have to bend over far enough to put her in a standing position now. Also an indicator of haw aged I am becoming. She has taken several long strolls and not had any crash issues yet.
MadB has really enjoyed school albeit the days are only an hour and a half so far, Tuesday begins full morning sessions. Josie took MB on day one as C was napping so Will and I had a good time to play together. We sculpted clay and played hot wheels. It is nice for him to get the full attention I am sure and it is kind of fun to hang with the dudes. Today we worked on our bikes in guy time. Will, C and I took MB today as Josie worked. It was fun to see her zip right in there like she was doing it for years. I think she will be a bit of a keener. Will really wants to go too now but he is going to have to settle with dad time.
jh

My apologies for no recent posts or updates. Between getting our things together for this house offer and my quick visit to Calgary I have had no time for fun. And again this connection is strange as I did lose two attempts due to lost connectivity. It seems to be associated with damp weather from if that is possible as the several hot dry weeks we had no issues.
CeeCee is really getting interested in walking and does find herself quite clever when she tries. She has really taken to it even since I first wrote this bit two days ago. I believe she could even be a toddler now. She is very funny and cute and seems to like being a little sister to the two rowdy gorillas who live here. She has no problem telling them to change what they are doing because she is not happy with it and has even on a couple of occasions attempted to slug or bludgeon with a toy her very caring and doting brother Will. Will doesn’t even notice as she still lacks any power to really affect him. He is not yet really sharp enough yet to read her body language or even see the rage in her face to figure out he should stop. Madeleine on the other hand does respond well to C’s signals and doesn’t hang around when she gets testy. MadB starts school in a couple of days now and is really looking forward to it. She wanted to buy a gift for her teacher today while we were at the market but we couldn’t settle on something subtle yet useful, and inexpensive. I negotiated for taking flowers out of the garden that Pauline has here. I suggested that this would be a great gesture as the little girl who lives in this house is away and will be joining her kindergarten class later. This way when she returns to Revelstoke we can tell her that some of her flowers went for the teacher from her and Madeleine. MadB liked the sound of that.
It is incredibly overcast and wet here. I have a funny feeling that when I was excited about the snow at higher altitudes last week that it was also the start of fall/winter. I really expected more hot weather. We are stuck in a cloud more or less and are expected to be so for several months.
We had some more company yesterday albeit briefly plus I worked. The Sara Nick Honour and Imogen family visited overnight and the kids loved it. Thanks for the visit and come back again, and everyone else too for that matter. I can’t enjoy all this snow by myself can I.

pictures for fun

Also when we were camping we saw this weird thing. Even our forestry freind had no clue.
jh

Bike park

Hey yes, the bike park is sweet. Madb took the picture of Will and this is one of our favourite places to go. Will just goes up and down and MadB practices two wheeler riding and having fun. The kick bike is sick and even the teenagers love it. We get a lot of compliments and MB does a lot of chattering and freind making, its a bit of an ice breaker for her. We even have a buddy, he was the dishwasher at the place I acted as a waiter. The kids here are pretty nice and freindly. No one tells us to move or grow up, they are respectful of us playing too and even encourage the kids. Compliments to them and their parents, I wonder if they realize they are creating kids who will be right into this later in life as a result.

Rainy weather and the arrival of Sept

We have had some wet weather and that seems to compromise our connection here so several posts have been lost in the electronic who knows where. I am sure some smart person cold find them but I need tutoring still. We have been busy anyway and there is no big news.
